What crawl space insulation does for your house

Crawl space insulation in Indio adds insulation and air sealing either under the floor of your house or along the crawl space walls, so the rooms above feel more comfortable and carry less noise.

Most people call us because the floors never feel right, or because they looked through the access hatch and didn't like what they saw. The price and the schedule mostly turn on what's down there: how big the crawl space is, whether we insulate the floor or seal the whole space, whether old insulation has to come out first, and whether rot, pest damage or gas equipment needs sorting before we start. I'm based in Indio and work across the Coachella Valley cities around it, and I come out myself to look, so the written estimate gives you your own figure.

  • Under the house before anything else

I go under the house myself to look for rot, pest damage and gas equipment, because insulation put over a problem just hides it until it costs you more.

  • Floor or sealed crawl space

We walk you through both ways of doing it once I've seen the space, since the right one depends on what's down there and whether your ductwork runs through it.

  • The house left as we found it

Crawl space work drags dirt and scraps toward the access, so we clean up as we go and only pack up when your house looks the way it did before we came.

How we insulate a crawl space, step by step

I start under the house, checking the framing for rot and pest damage and finding any gas equipment down there. Repairs get sorted before any insulation goes up, because a soft joist with new insulation over it is still a soft joist. Then we choose together whether to insulate under the floor or seal the crawl space as a whole. On the work itself, our lead installer runs the crew, and they seal the holes in the subfloor around plumbing, wiring and the like first so the new insulation isn't fighting a draft. After that the insulation goes in, the debris comes out and the access gets closed up. I check it all over before we call it finished.

If we seal the crawl space instead of the floor, California's energy rules call for a vapor retarder, a layer that slows moisture, over the dirt floor of any unvented crawl space, since it cuts down the moisture coming up and protects the insulation from condensation. That's the job our crawl space vapor barrier work covers. Sealing the subfloor is also where our air sealing services start, and we can carry that through the rest of the house. If rooms still feel uneven once the floor is done, wall insulation is usually the next thing to look at.

When crawl space insulation makes sense

Floors that feel cold or drafty

Air slips up from the crawl space through gaps around pipes and wiring, so sealing those and insulating below makes the rooms above feel more even underfoot.

Noise coming up through the floor

Insulation under the floor helps with sound as well as comfort, so footsteps, the washer or anything rattling under the house carries less into the rooms above.

Old insulation sagging or soiled

When old batts are hanging down, wet or full of droppings, they come out before anything new goes in, because fresh insulation over them keeps the problem under your floor.

Rentals between tenants

Property managers call us too, and an empty house is a good time for this work, since the crew can get in and out of the crawl space without working around anyone.

Get a written estimate for your crawl space

Send the form and we'll reply within one business day to set a time. I come out, go under the house and give you a free written estimate, with no obligation.

  • Priced from what's really there

The visit means a look under your floor at the framing, the old insulation and any gas equipment, so the estimate is built on what's actually down there and not a guess.

  • Every step listed in order

Your estimate lists each step in the order we'll do it, so you can see what's prep, what's repair and what's insulation before you agree to anything.

  • Your satisfaction, guaranteed

That's the promise behind every crawl space job we finish, and it's why nothing gets called done until the whole job, from prep to cleanup, is the way it should be.

Crawl space insulation questions from Indio homeowners

Straight answers to what homeowners ask before they let a crew under the house, from choosing a method to what it costs.

Should I seal my crawl space or just insulate under the floor?

Usually sealing it, since federal building guidance calls air sealing and insulating the crawl space walls, with air exchange to the house, best practice in every climate. Closing the vents alone can raise moisture, though, and sealing in gas equipment that draws its air from down there could be deadly, so we plan for it first. I make the call with you on site.

Can I insulate my crawl space myself?

You can, but energy-efficiency guidance rates it a moderate to difficult do-it-yourself project, and the payoff can be substantial only if it's done correctly. That means working on your back in a tight space, sealing every gap around pipes and wiring, and knowing what to do about gas equipment or a soft joist. Call (760) 262-0752 if you'd rather hand it off.

Who can legally do insulation work in California?

A contractor licensed in California's insulation and acoustical contractor class, which covers installing any insulating material for temperature or sound control. Unlicensed help can only take a job under $1,000 when the work needs no permit and they employ no one. Otherwise a license is required, even below $1,000. We're fully licensed and insured.

How much does crawl space insulation cost in Riverside County?

Insulating a crawl space in the Riverside area usually costs about $1,600 to $7,000 per job. That's what the work generally runs around here, not our price. Where yours lands depends on the size of the space, whether we insulate the floor or seal the walls, and what has to be fixed or removed first, and your written estimate puts it in plain numbers.

What happens if mold or asbestos turns up in my crawl space?

We stop and tell you, because some finds need a specialist before our work goes on. Older crawl spaces can have asbestos-based wraps on ducts and pipes, and a certified asbestos abatement firm handles those. Surface mold or fungus calls for a certified mold remediation expert to inspect and set a cleaning plan first, and we pick back up once that's done.
